Self-DRiving hydrOPonic System
Study and optimise light quality and quantity demand
In this project we use a special light equipment (pulse width modulated-high brightness-light emitting diodes lights (PWM-HB-LEDs) able to blink at different frequency/duty. This technology have been used to investigate the effect of the frequency and duty as well as the spectra distribution to optimise growth, modulate specific plant traits and understand easily the effect of colours proportions (R,G,B,IR) on plant growth. In particular we develop several light equipments able to regulate the light intensity and the duty independently for each color (included the additional mid strips of LEDs) both as overlap or separated interval as showed in the picture below.
The frequency can be adjusted up to 1 MHz, and by having the ability of splitting the 100% duty in alternate step of 10% light/dark. It is possible to additionally increase the frequency of pulse up to 5 MHz. Furthermore a special high-irradiance light high able to produce a very intense light square of 2x3cm (over μmol/s ) have been used for dynamic measurements of photosynthesis in small chamber on single leaf using a portable photosynthesis systems for gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements.
